Thank you for the report. MySQL Workbench is not supporte since 5.0.r10 and not packed into packages accessible from http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/gui-tools/index.html From which url did you download the package?

Please, check with a newer version of MySQL Workbench, 5.1.10, and Ubuntu, 8.04 at least. It should work.
