How to repeat:
compiled mysql-administrator from svn, ran it from a shell, clicked down the list of categories.  closed it and saw the above error.

better steps: clicked on "startup parameters, get "mysql-safe / mysqld" dialog, clicked cancel and saw all 3 at the same time:

clicked on "startup parameters, get "mysqld-safe / mysqld" dialog, clicked OK for_safe.  

I don't see a way to now get to the mysqld parameters, other than restarting the app.
