Description:
If there's not enough free space in /tmp for the query (especially for grouping), MySQL craches.

How to repeat:
I tried it with a 64kbyte /tmp memory based file system, with a huge statistic table. It's a Debian Linux, and a fresh MySQL.

Thank you for a problem report. Please, send the appropriate part of MySQL server error log that contains information about the crash. The exact table, sample data and query that crashes server will be also useful.
