Can you try the 5.0 CHM manual available here? http://dev.mysql.com/doc/

Yes. That works but they are different versions. The one works is upto 5.0.9 and the one shipped with the binary distribution is upto 5.0.13

Yes, as it is easy to check, the manual included into 5.0.15 distribution packages ("This is the Reference Manual for the MySQL Database System, Version 5.0, up to Release 5.0.13-rc.") has no index and search features. Looks like index items was not defined or was "missed" somehow during packaging. We should either fix it, or simply do not include that manual.chm into the distribution and ask people to use online version only.

The 5.0 CHM manual has been updated at: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/ It should have index/search and is current for 5.0.16.
