Description:
Installation of
http://dev.mysql.com/get/Downloads/MySQL-4.1/mysql-essential-4.1.14-win32.msi/from/pick

Fails with message:
"This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows installer package"

How to repeat:
Downloaded the file twice and tried to repeat installation for at least 10 times. No change

Suggested fix:
Possible reasons might be:
- Corrupt package
- Incompatible Windows version
- Local virus protection

Have you tried to install .zip (http://dev.mysql.com/get/Downloads/MySQL-4.1/mysql-4.1.14-win32.zip/from/pick)? It contains compressed installer (.exe), and it works for me on XP.

By trying this we may figure out the following reasons:
- Incompatible Windows version (I have no SP1 installed, but with XP SP2 this distribution of 4.1.14 also works for me)
- Local virus protection
