Can not reproduce on mysql-4.1.13 and mysql-5.0.10-beta on a non-virtualized machine. mysqld is clearly started with the *undocumented* --no-defaults option.

The tests fail because the test suite is broken, see: http://lists.mysql.com/bugs/15623 and not because of /etc/my.cnf Sorry for misreporting. I was not after that iPod Nano promotion.
