Description:
i have also this problem
why i cant use trascation in stored functions, it was better in old ver
i was beild beffor some functions use this way now i have to chang my functions to stored procedures
and chang all the statments which use this functions....
or still use old ver.

is that true

it was work until 5.0.6
and after that no ver can worked good

How to repeat:
try using any trascation statment in stored function

"We should not allow explicit or implicit transaction commits inside
  of stored functions or triggers (so in autocommit mode we should not
  do commits after execution of sub-statement).
  Also since we don't support nested statement transactions in 5.0,
  we shouldn't commit or rollback stmt transactions while we are inside
  stored functions or triggers. This should be fixed in later (>=5.1)
  releases."

why!

ther is no big special defrent between functoins and procedures 
mybe triggars but functions is defrint
