Description:
In the method adjust_node_proximity one can set adjusted_group.
This setting has no effect since the variable is a stack variable.
The same goes for a lot of other changes in the same method.

How to repeat:
Found through code review and debugging other things.

Suggested fix:
Rewrite and simplify code :)
