Description:
Can't connect to localhost; get message "Error: unknown system variable 'sql_mode' (code 1193)"

How to repeat:
Try to log in as root to a local copy of MySQL

I have the exact same problem here, using OS X Tiger 10.4.1, MySQL 4.0.24 (MySQL distribution).
I didn't do anything to the config file. I only password protected the root account...

Fixed in 1.0.22.
