Description:
the MySQL installation fails with Internal Error 2753 when a CUSTOM install is performed and the only option chosen is the MySQL Command Line Shell.

Exact error message pop-up is as follows:

Internal Error 2753. MySQLInstanceConfig.exe

After clicking OK to the error, the MySQL.exe software works.

How to repeat:
Run SETUP.exe after extracting the mysql-4.1.7-win.zip program and choose CUSTOM installation. Only install the MySQL Command Line Shell.

Suggested fix:
It appears as though the installation process tries to run the MySQLInstanceConfig.exe program even when that option is NOT installed. When it's not installed, don't try to run the program.
