Description:
I downloaded "WAMP 1.7.0" and "mysql-gui-tools-5.0-r11a-win32.msi", then i installed them.

When i try to open MySQL Administrator (Version 1.2.11) a message (Either the server service or the configuration file could not be found. Startup variables and service section are therefore disabled) was appeared and the sections (Service Control and Startup Variables) were disabled.

How to repeat:
??

Suggested fix:
But when i use MySQL Administrator Version 1.1.9., there is not any problem. The Service Control and also Startup Variables sections are enabled.

Thank you for a problem report. Do you have any my.ini file as a result of installation, and where is it located?
[27 Apr 2007 21:26] mustafa turgut

Please, send the results of

net start

Are you sure that same my.ini file was used when services was configured?

For the record I am also experiencing the same problem with my upgrade. I downloaded the upgrade in Feb but have not upgraded until today.

I just uninstalled an unknown standalone version of mysql-administrator and installed mysql-gui-tools-5.0-r9a-win32.msi

I replaced an unknown version of mysql 5 with mysql-noinstall-5.0.27-win32.zip at the same time.

After having this problem I downloaded the 5.0-r11a windows .msi gui tools, same resulting error. No known problems previously with the standalone version of the administrator which I have possibly used since mysql 4.x as I tend not to upgrade the tools that work.

my.ini is in c:\winnt (windows 2000 pro SP4 etc.), and yes that is where it has been all along in my case. I have never used the installer for mysql and have always had good luck with the noinstall version.

Here is my net start (none of which has changed in 6 months or better):

Hi,
I had the same error on both Windows XP SP2 and Vista.
Mysql Administrator V1.2.5rc, Mysql Server 5.0.

I worked around it on XP by disabling the following option in the configuration file : (it works, I have no idea why, although it doesn't help me creating InnoDB tables)
the [mysqld] section :

# The default storage engine that will be used when create new tables when
#default-storage-engine=INNODB
# If we activate this option above, then the service can't be restarted

Under Vista, I solved it thanks to the bug report #23746 and this workaround above.

Hope this help !

Thank you for the feedback.

But I want to check if I catched the problem.

Please confirm or refuse:

1. You have no problem on Windows 2000 machine.
2. Error only occurs on Win XP machine.
3. When MySQL Administrator of old version worked perfectly unknown MySQL server was installed (not from WAMP package)

The following fixed this problem for me on Windows XP given that the Service is running and picking up the correct options from the config file.

1) Invoke MySQL Administrator on the localhost and before choosing OK to connect press and hold the <Ctrl> key. The Cancel button caption changes to Skip.

2) Now choose the Skip option and be presented with a cut down list of options in the left pane of the Administrator on start up.

3) Choose the Service Control option in the left pane and choose the Configure Service tab in the right pane.

4) Untick the option box for Named Pipes and click Apply.

5) Exit and then logon as normal.

Obviously this only works if the named pipe option box is already checked with a tick!

1 - Operating system is Windows XP SP2.

2 - "WAMP 1.7.0" was installed.

3 - "mysql-gui-tools-5.0-r11a-win32.msi" was installed. (This package also includes MySQL Version 1.2.11)

4 - When i try to open MySQL Administrator (Version 1.2.11) a message (Either the server service or the configuration file could not be found. Startup variables and service section are therefore disabled) was appeared and the sections (Service Control and Startup Variables) were disabled.

5 - I uninstalled "mysql-gui-tools-5.0-r11a-win32.msi" package. Then i installed the older version of MySQL Administrator (Version 1.1.9) separately.

6 - There is no problem with the MySQL Administrator (Version 1.1.9).

Thank you for the feedback.

MySQL installed by WAMP is running as "wampmysqld" service.

MySQL Administarator has limitation to configure only MySQL service. This limitation is documented at http://dev.mysql.com/doc/administrator/en/mysql-administrator-service-control-start-stop-s...

So I'll clarify the report as "Not a Bug"

Workaround: drop wampmysqld and create new identical MySQL service.

Simply, you must run the Administrator tool, and before push login botton, press and hold ctrl key in order to view a new button labeled <Skip>, then we can choose all parameters and evenstop, and desinstall, install the service.
