This is intentional. It is still possible to run mysqld built for Solaris 9 and Solaris 8 with libmtmalloc by using LD_PRELOAD.

I am glad to hear that this is intentional. Yes, LD_PRELOADing libmtmalloc does work and this is exactly what we do.
