That first line should have read "Once "Client Only" setup has been performed, MySQL refuses to install MySQL command line client." Apologies for any confusion.

Additional: I was able to succeed in the install by checking the "MySQL Server 5.5.15" in the *centre* pane and deselecting all but the client programs. So it looks like no install is attempted unless the centre pane was explicitly ticked, rather than when it is filled in as a result of choosing options on the right pane alone.
