by contrast, WB 5.1.18 is resizable and usable

BTW, I know that I can place the dock icons laterally, bu this is not an acceptable workaround for anyone used to have them at the bottom.

More information: I am using a MacBook, which has a 13" screen using the default maximum resolution of 1280x800 (http://www.apple.com/macbook/)

We did some re-layouting and now were able to further reduce the min-height of the app. Judging from the attached screenshot you should now be able to use WB correctly, even if you have the dock at the bottom. I myself (on my MacBook and my PowerBook) and almost everybody I know prefers to have the Dock on the side when using such a small screen because it makes you more productive. But this is up to the personal taste of each individual :)

the min-window-height has been reduced by 30 px. now it should be possible to work at resolutions only 800px high, even if dock is sitting on default bottom location.

An entry has been added to the 5.2.10 changelog: When using the data modeler, MySQL Workbench extended vertically to the maximum size of the screen, overlapping the dock, and thereby making it impossible to use.
