Description:
running e.g. order_by test (and many others) under valgrind we get :

==17932== Conditional jump or move depends on uninitialised value(s)
==17932==    at 0x874677: strmake (strmake.c:44)
==17932==    by 0x857FB5: fn_format (mf_format.c:92)
....

How to repeat:
run order_by.test under valgrind in mtr

Suggested fix:
backport the 5.1 code
