Description:
Currently MySQL does not support multiple GIS projections, and has only 2G GIS
functions.

Some other opensource database vendors have embedded Proj.4 library to facilitate
multiple projections, thus superseding OpenGIS. 

MySQL needs 3D spatial support, with coordinate systems like ECEF.
