Column types are shown/hidden only when you add/remove or change some column after changing settings in Options. Same it true for flags (you have to set/remove some flag and then they all will be shown/updated at the EER Diagaram. This is a minor bug.

An entry was added to the 5.1.13 changelog: In the Workbench Preferences dialog, on the Diagram tab, in the Tables panel, the checkboxes Show Column Types and Show Column Flags did not work correctly. Selecting or deselecting Show Column Types only had an effect when MySQL Workbench was restarted. Selecting Show Column Flags had no effect at all, and the flags were never displayed.
