Description:
We provide .tar and .rpm packages of the (now unified) source distribution in 5.1. Could we please also add .zip packages? RPM is useless on Windows, and .tar requires additional software (like 7-zip) to extract. ZIP file support is now baked into Windows, so it would be convenient to have this distributed in this manner.

How to repeat:
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/5.1.html#source

Suggested fix:
Add a ZIP distribution of source code.

The build tools have been changed recently,
so source packages in zip format are generated for all versions.
Obviously, it was not reported here.

This has become effective with 5.0.48,
definitely the current source download page (5.0.67) contains a zip source file.
Sadly it is still called "Windows source", even though the contents is identical for all platforms.

For 5.1, these sources get created starting from version 5.1.21,
but the download page does not list them.
I will file a request to get the web page changed.

This is solved, the current sources in ZIP package format are listed on the community download pages: 5.0.67, 5.1.28, and 6.0.6

As the tool change (which was done earlier) did not make them visible, this is effective (for the user) for the versions listed above.
It was effective for 5.0 earlier, but I can't say since when exactly.

I won't decide whether this is worth documenting as a bug fix, but it might be described in the general sections about getting the sources.

The ZIP format is typically used on Windows, very uncommon on Unix, but still: The package contents are the generic sources for all platforms, it does not differ between ".tar.gz" and ".zip".
(We have no specific "Windows sources" any more.)
That is also the reason why I switch "OS" from "Microsoft Windows" to "any", even though I know that the users interested in this will typically be those running Windows.

Noted in 5.0.48, 5.0.51, 5.1.28, 6.0.6 changelogs.

MySQL source distributions are now available in Zip format.
