Sergey: Thanks for the bug report. This assert does not prevent errors. It is there to prevent slightly non-optimal execution.

Noted in 5.1.66, 5.5.29, 5.6.7, 5.7.0 changelogs. In debug builds, an InnoDB assertion was overly aggressive about prohibiting an open range.
