the same thing happen to me. In past, I use mysql 3.x connector/J 2.0. The chinese character display correctly. After I update mysql to 4.0x connector/J to 3.0. The chinese character display wrong.(I use tomcat 5.x)only one of them is right(maybe 100 chinese word only 2 word display correctly) And if I use mysqlCC to see the data in mysql 4.0x the character display correctly, in the other side, if I use MySQL query browser to query the database, all character wrong.

Thank you for your bug report. This issue has been committed to our source repository of that product and will be incorporated into the next release. If necessary, you can access the source repository and build the latest available version, including the bugfix, yourself. More information about accessing the source trees is available at http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Installing_source_tree.html Additional info: This problem has been fixed. There still seems to be a slight problem with simplified Chinese but that may be an issue with the server.
