Description:
After upgrading workbench to 5.0.29 using the Hekp - install updates function, the program will not start. After the splash screen appears but before the main window opens an error window appears stating MySql Workbench has stopped working.

Below is the event viewer output that matches the failure timestamp:

How to repeat:
Version 5.0.27 causes Data Protection Exceptions and version 5.0.25 was the only one available to me for re-install. Your website no longer provides me with earlier versions of workbench - the msi files are zero length when I try to download.

To recreate this problem, install a version of workbench that starts on Vista without error (such as 5.0.25) and then do the Help - install updates. No errors occur during the installation.

The program will not start as noted above.

Suggested fix:
A work around for me is to continue to use version 5.0.25 but that version contains some major bugs so I am unwilling to use it except where I absolutely can't avoid it.
[15 Dec 2008 8:32] Susanne Ebrecht
Many thanks for writing a bug report.

How did you upgrade Workbench?
[15 Dec 2008 18:39] Gerry Matte
I see that my first sentance in the description contains a typo. Sorry for that.

I uninstalled the broken version 5.0.27 of workbench. It causes a Data Protection Exception under Vista.

Using a msi file I saved earlier, I then installed a clean version 5.0.25 which starts without any errors. With that version open, I used Help-Update to automatically download version 5.0.29 and kick off the upgrade.

By the way, in case it makes a difference I am using the Ultimate version of Windows Vista. It's possible that version is slightly different than other versions (but I doubt it).

Could you please provide your hardware info, similar to the below one:

OS: Windows XP
CPU: Intel(R) Celeron(R) M CPU 420 @ 1.60GHz, 0.9 GB RAM
Video adapter info:
Adapter type: ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M Series
Chip Type: ATI display adapter (0x5A62)
BIOS String: BK-ATI VER008.050I.026.000
Video Memory: 65536 KB

and also verify if the crash is related to the Windows DEP. Thanks in
advance.
[16 Dec 2008 16:49] Gerry Matte
Dell Inspiron 1721 laptop purchased December 2007
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate with all MS patches applied (to Dec 11)
CPU: AMD Turion X2 TL64 at 2.2 GHz
RAM: 4 Gb
Video: ATI Radeon Xpress 1270, Dell version

For this version 5.0.29 I had no indication that Windows DEP was involved. I only mentioned that because I am still awaiting a fix for my earlier bug report which did involve Windows DEP with version 5.0.27.
[18 Dec 2008 10:38] Susanne Ebrecht
Many thanks for your answer.

I can't repeat your problem.

It could be related to Vista but it also could be related to Update.

I need additional tests here ...
[18 Dec 2008 10:55] Susanne Ebrecht
I tried your way to update. First install Workbench 5.0.25 and then update to 5.0.29 and still can't reproduce your behaviour.

This seems to be vista related.
[18 Dec 2008 11:12] MySQL Verification Team
I did the update from 5.0.27 to 5.0.29 on Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit and I was unable to repeat the behavior reported.
[18 Dec 2008 16:55] Gerry Matte
Thanks for spending time on this.
My version of Windows Ultimate is the normal 32 bit - not 64 bit.
However I doubt that is relevant.

If no other users are reporting a problem then there must be something unique about my system.

The only other possibility is that my anti-virus program (McAffee Security Centre) is somehow interfering.

Does workbench attempt to access the internet as it starts up ? I have sometimes seen Windows firewall and McAfee react agressively to programs that do so.....

I will try to do a complete uninstall and new re-install of version 5.0.29 tonight. That may work ..... I will post the results in either case.
[31 Dec 2008 12:20] MySQL Verification Team
Thank you for the bug report. Indeed there are several bug reports with almost the same behavior, most of them the crash happens when the initial screen is displayed, others worked sometime and suddenly begin to crash. Are you tried disabling Mcafee?. Thanks in advance.
[11 Jan 2009 21:31] Rick Sanderson
I have a similar problem (Vista-64bit), and have discovered the (or one) cause and a workaround.

The error seems to occur if the model file that Workbench attempts to open upon startup is no longer on disk. (At least this was the problem for me).

I discovered this by using Windows Task Manager to end the Workbench Splashcreen task (not the Workbench Error task). The error message about the missing file was then was displayed (it had been hidden behind the splash screen). Pressing OK on the error message dialog now allowed Workbench to open, and I could continue.

Hope this helps.
[13 Jan 2009 7:06] Gerry Matte
I uninstalled version 5.0.29 completely and re-installed from the msi file.
On startup, workbench stopped working as it has in the past.

I then uninstalled 5.0.29 completely again.
I unplugged my network cable and completely disabled McAfee anti-virus.
I then re-installed 5.0.29 from the msi file.
On startup, workbench again stopped working.

I then re-enabled McAfee, reconnected my network cable, and uninstalled 5.0.29.

I knew that 5.0.25 would work but I had not tested 5.0.26 so I decided to try that version. No luck - after I installed 5.0.26 on startup workbench stopped working.

So, I uninstalled 5.0.26, re-installed 5.0.25, and started workbench.
It started with no apparent problems.

I have concluded that some change introduced between 5.0.25 and 5.0.26 is causing workbench to stop working in my environment. I strongly recommend that you look at the changes made for version 5.0.26 to see if anything might have caused Vista to stop workbench from starting up.

I am currently unable to use a version of workbench SE that is greater than 5.0.25. However, at least I am able to now use workbench again.
[14 Jan 2009 12:26] MySQL Verification Team
Thank you for the feedback. Do you have the option "Automatically reopen last opened model whem started" checked?. Handling another bug report and user commented he have checked this option I was able to repeat similar behavior, so if you use that option please unckeck and try again. Thanks in advance.
[15 Jan 2009 0:49] Gerry Matte
What is the default state of that option after a fresh new installation ?
I do not recall ever making a change to that option - and I assume that an uninstall would throw away my choice in any case.

I am of course unable to see the state of that option after I perform a reinstall because workbench stops working before the splash screen goes away.

If you believe that the option setting will exist somewhere on my PC after I do an uninstall I can attempt another reinstall of 5.0.29 but I recently spent an entire evening testing and I don't see how I can determine the option setting after a reinstall. Is it stored in the registry, in an ini file, or where ?
[21 Jan 2009 14:24] MySQL Verification Team
The default I noticed is unckecked. What I did to fix the problem when that option was checked was to remove the whole folder of Workbench in the directory:
Documents and Settings\my_user_account\Application Data\MySQL\ and then when I started WB it was created with the default value.
[22 Jan 2009 5:48] Gerry Matte
Ok, as requested I uninstalled the working version of Workbench SE. I did NOT however reboot the PC.

I then tried to locate the Workbench folder you said would be in "c:\Documents and Settings\[profilename]\Application Data\mysql".
I quickly began to suspect that you are working with Windows XP or an earlier version of windows. Surely you are noty testing my bug on a vserion of windows that is not Vista ?

Under Vista, Application Data is not stored as a sub folder of "c:\Documents and Settings" - rather it is a sub folder of "C:\Users".
Assumining that was a simple mistake on your part, I attempted to locate the folder you identified using c:\Users as the root.

On my machine, an attempt to navigate into c:\Users\Gerry\Application Data\ produces the frustrating error "Access is denied".

I managed after much research to grant myself permission (by taking Ownership) to the folder c:\Users\Gerry\Application Data\ and then I was able to delete the folder: c:\Users\Gerry\Application Data\C:\Users\Gerry\Application Data\MySQL\Workbench

I then installed version 5.0.29 SE as per normal.

When I started Workbench I once again experienced the familiar "Workbench has stopped working".

I have devoted many hours now to doing test installations. I have done so because I paid for this product and I want to continue using the most current version.

I have to say that my confidence in your test environment has been shaken by the request to perform this process with no indication of the types of problems I would have to deal with in order to delete the Workbench folder. Are you really testing on a Windows Vista PC ?

Has anyone looked at the changes introduced between version 5.0.25 and 5.0.26 as I requested January 13 ? A change introduced between those two versions broke Workbench on Vista Ultimate.
[22 Jan 2009 6:54] Gerry Matte
Just in case it makes a difference, I noticed that when I performed my last install of version 5.0.29 I accidentally installed the oss version instead of the SE version. So, whatever is causing the problem is not tied to the SE version - both versions stop working.
[26 Jan 2009 15:14] Susanne Ebrecht
Wow. Many thanks for your great feedback. I will set this to verified so that our development is able to look into it and to correct this path chaos.
[27 Jan 2009 15:52] Paul Crossley
I have the same problem on Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1
and the 5.0.29 OSS edition.

I have also tried starting workbench as an administrator but to no avail.
[3 Feb 2009 7:56] Lamont Peterson
Windows Vista Business 64 bit SP1. Same problem during splashscreen. I can get to a point where it indicates that DEP is the reason for the crash.

I've tried the workaround mentioned above, but it doesn't help.

The Application Data is at the C:\Users\lamontp\AppData\Roaming\MySQL\Workbench\ directory. Permanently deleted that directory but no luck trying to run it again.

Kill the splashscreen process via Task Manager hasn't helped, either. I do not see the dialog.

I don't think it is trying to open a previous document/model on this installation.

I'm happy to perform steps (if someone will give them to me) to get a dump of the failed process if that could help.
[26 Feb 2009 13:29] Susanne Ebrecht
This needs re-verifying with vista
[26 Feb 2009 13:36] Susanne Ebrecht
We have to look if this still occurs in Workbench 5.1

Needs re-verifying when Workbench 5.1 for Windows is out
[7 Mar 2009 9:46] Christopher Chapman
I'm having the same problem on 5.0.30 that I just downloaded. The strange thing is that I was able to get it working on my wife's computer. Both are Vista Home Premium with all current patches. The only thing different is that I have a lot of development tools on my machine and hers is pretty much the standard web, and office apps. Aside from a few visual developer updates all windows updates on the two machines are the same. Two different AVs but I've disabled them on both machines with no luck. I have a base loaded Vista Ultimate 64 machine at work I'm going to try on this coming week.
[12 Mar 2009 11:23] Susanne Ebrecht
All reporters,

because Workbench 5.1 has a different code base we are sure that these crashes won't occur with Workbench 5.1. We expect publishing Workbench 5.1 for Windows soon.
[12 Mar 2009 11:55] Susanne Ebrecht
I just talked again with our development.

WB 5.1 has not total different code base just some changes in backend.
[12 Mar 2009 12:01] Susanne Ebrecht
After long discussions today with our development I will set this to verified because of so many having same problem.

We will do our very best to figure out what exactly is wrong here and try to fix it as soon as possible.
[16 Mar 2009 12:01] Susanne Ebrecht
Bug #43657 is marked as duplicate of this bug here
[19 Mar 2009 19:54] Danielle Keeling
I am also having the same problem. I see the splash screen but get the error message before the program starts. I also get the same error message as reported in the initial bug. I have a Toshiba Satellite A215 laptop purchased April 2008. Windows Vista Home Edition (base) and I have various development tools installed. I have several development projects pending and my client specifically requested MySQL for the back end so I'm kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place....
[19 Mar 2009 21:09] Gerry Matte
It looks to me that a common thread is that people are experiencing the problem on a development computer. Not surprising given that we are talking about a database development tool. My PC is also heavily loaded with development tools - mainly J2EE and web tools.

I do have problems with the Microsoft "C" library whenever I install upgrades or patches to products that use the C library. I use Roxio Creator 10 (aka Easy Media Creator) for CD and DVD operations. It seems to require an older version of the C library because every once in a while the task bar components fail to load on startup. Usually after I have just installed a new program or an update of an existing program. I now just use Control Panel, programs , "Repair" which makes Roxio again load successfully.

Since the problem first appeared in 5.0.26 of Workbench, did you start using a new C function that did not exist in older C libraries ? (Just a thought)
[3 Jun 2009 13:30] Mike Lischke
Garry, can you do one more test? The splash screen can be suppressed by giving "-nologo" on the command line when starting WB. Does this make your WB installation starting ok?
[3 Jun 2009 15:57] Gerry Matte
Will do.
What version of Workbench SE do you want me to test ?
G
[3 Jun 2009 19:07] Mike Lischke
Garry, use whatever you have. Ideally you would test all versions (5.0, 5.1, OSS, SE) but I would also be happy if you take the one you used when you reported the bug. Thank you.
[11 Jun 2009 4:59] Gerry Matte
As requested I uninstalled Version 5.0.25 SE and installed 5.0.30 OSS.
I created a desktop shortcut to MySQLWorkbench.exe and appended the command line parameter -nologo.

When I double clicked the shortcut - "MySql Workbench has stopped working" appeared almost immediately.

I uninstalled 5.0.30 OSS and installed 5.0.30 SE and performed the exact same process with the exact same results.

I then uninstalled 5.0.30 SE and reinstalled 5.0.25 SE and created a shortcut to MySQLWorkbench.exe with parameter -nologo. When I clicked that, the program starts without a splash screen but it takes a few seconds more to start than the error screen halt for 5.0.30.
[11 Jun 2009 7:01] Mike Lischke
Garry, thank you very much for your patience and your help. Unfortunately, nothing has made us so far able to find out what the culprit is. Everybody to whom I could reach out and who tested it confirms WB runs fine on Vista. There must be something very special in your setup, say, a certain combination of drivers or a certain piece of hardware or whatever.

The only thing that is left would be to get access to your box. Since this is not possible, would it be possible for you to create a virtual machine of your box? Maybe then we can reproduce the problem and find the origin. However, even then there is quite a high risk we cannot find it if the problem depends on things we cannot simulate (e.g. CPU speed or anything related to specific hardware).

We will soon publish MySQL Workbench 5.1, which contains a large number of changes and improvements over 5.0. Please try this release on your box and let us know if that finally works for you.

Thanks again.
[11 Jun 2009 16:00] Gerry Matte
Hi Mike.
I'm surprised that you feel this problem is unique to my PC. Look back over the history of this bug report - in particular the postings of 31Dec, 11Jan, 27Jan, 03Feb, 07Mar, and 19Mar. Others are having similar problems. I'm guessing that they've given up on future upgrades to workbench. I want to continue using it because it's a great tool - but I don't want to have to stay at 5.0.25 forever either.

For me version 5.0.25 is a stable version that works fine and has been re-installed many times as I perform tests requested by your staff. I've been unable to install and startup any higher version than that. So, .... what changes were made for version 5.0.26 that affect the startup execution ? Did you perhaps change to a different C Library ?

There really is nothing unique about my machine except the fact that I have a lot of development languages and utilities installed. One of the earlier posts had a similar situation - his machine won't execute and is a development machine but his wife's PC works fine. Other than a C Library incompatibility, can you think of any other developer components that might be incompatible with workbench ? I wondered for instance if the .NET engine might not cooperate well......

I'm not willing to send you an image of my PC. There's too much personal information there for me to ever want to risk. Sorry.

Is there anything else I can send you ? I'm not sure if the error window offers any ability to trigger more detail such as a memory dump ..... but I'm not sure if you would make use of one any way.

Is there any way that you could create a debug version that writes to a log file as it goes through it's startup ? At least then you might be able to zero in on the code that fails .....
[3 Jul 2009 6:32] Gerry Matte
Today I downloaded and installed Workbench 5.1.16 SE
Same results - program stops working during startup.
[8 Jul 2009 12:53] Susanne Ebrecht
Garry and all other reporters,

first of all many thanks for your feedback.

Please, believe us, this bug has a real high priority for us. There are lots of users outside, who have same problems.

Almost all of our developers and support engineers tried to reproduce it and all of us failed.

I have two ideas why this could happen:

1) how do you open Workbench? Do you click on an old mwb file?
Please try several ways to start Workbench ... when all of this will fail then there is only the other idea left.

2) It seems that the problem is related to configuration and/or software of your system.
Another software that bites Workbench.

It would be nice, when we could get a list of the following:
1) language of Windows
2) time zone of your Windows
3) which graphic card driver are you using?
4) RAM
5) RAM of graphic card
6) a list of all software that you installed on your computer

Please hide this information from public.

If you are using none free software on your computer (something like AutoCad, VS, MS Office + Access or whatever else) then we would plead you to test if this is the reason.

ANSWER:
I normally start Workbench from the Start menu.
At your suggestion, I used Explorer | Open With to associate MWB files with Workbench 5.0.25 SE and I could then double-click an mwb file to kickoff workbench.
I then re-installed Workbench 5.1.16 SE and tried to associate that version with MWB filoes but for some reason, windows kicked off version 5.0.25 SE

Many thanks for your feedback.

The only software that I see that nobody of us at mysql has is CorelDraw.

Maybe this and Workbench will bite each other.

Unfortunately, we don't have CorelDraw and it is really expensive. Please, will you make a test if all works fine without CorelDraw on same machine.
[14 Jul 2009 3:06] Lamont Peterson
I do not have CorelAnything and I still have this problem. I doubt Corel has anything to do with it.

I do have Microsoft .net frameworks and Studio 2008 Express installed. There are some MS-SQL tools which came with that.

What's so hard about providing a debug build that someone like me could run and then feed you the resulting dump?
[14 Jul 2009 3:18] Lamont Peterson
1) how do you open Workbench? Do you click on an old mwb file?

No. Desktop icon and Programs menu icon installed with WorkBench. I've also tried clobbering those when uninstalling and starting with freshly installed icons. Launching from the command line or with launchy doesn't help, either.

Please try several ways to start Workbench ... when all of this will fail then there is
only the other idea left.

5) RAM of graphic card

  196MB (I think 64MB dedicated and 128MB shared).

6) a list of all software that you installed on your computer

Some games (World of Warcraft, StarCraft, Supreme Commander, BZ Flag, Star Trek: Armada, Homeworld, Homeworld2)
OpenOffice 3, Opera, Safari 4, Firefox

MS Visual Studio 2008 Express (free download)
  MySQL 5.1.x, MySQL GUI Tools
[17 Jul 2009 18:37] Christopher Chapman
I haven't really had any input but have been following for quite some time.

It seems that a few people listed MS Visual Studio Express 2008.

I'm having the same issues as everyone else and I have Visual Studio Express 2008 as well.

I've loaded Workbench on my wifes computer which doesn't have Visual Studio Express(or any other Dev tools for that matter!)and everything works fine.

For me I don't know if taking just that one program off would work since I've got about every MS Dev tool out there and they all like to share and integrate parts.

Not a sure thing but just an observation. At least MS Visual Studio Express is free to test with!
[21 Jul 2009 23:06] Gerry Matte
I don't knowingly have any Microsoft Development tools installed. The closest I might have is the .NET framework and the C## libraries which were installed as part of packages I bought.

So it's unlikely to be Visual Studio 2008 ...... more likely that tool installs an infrastructure that I also have installed.
[23 Jul 2009 13:43] Mike Lischke
Well, if the existence of a MS development tool would be the reason for the crash then we would have found the problem already, as we use those dev tools ourselves.

Another thing to check for those who see the crash: immediately after the crash go to your event log (applications) and look if there is an error message, like a SideBySide error followed by an application error. Please let me know the messages here.

This was a surprise.
I could not see any thing that requested a reply from me.

first, sorry for the long radio-silence.

i hope you still have some time/will to try to help us get this fixed. Please download and try the latest 5.2 alpha version (which is going beta in a few days) to see if you still face this problem with the latest codebase we have out. (only OSS avail. yet).

please also remove again the complete workbench preferences dir (which on vista/win7 is located in <sysdrive>:/Users/<username>/AppData/Roaming/MySQL/

thx in advance

After my last email requesting an extension of my subscription to Workbench SE, I decided to try again.

I could only download the community edition - I used 5.1.18a.

I did not uninstall the previous working version. I just ran the install for 5.1.18a.

It worked. Somehow you fixed the problem between 5.1.16 and 5.1.18a.

The only outstanding action is a response to my email requesting that the subscription be extended for the period from December 2008 to November 2009 when the problem was resolved. The messageid for that request is Message ID: 10342154.

Thanks

that are great news. so we can consider this one fixed in 5.1.18.
thx for your patience.

An entry has been added to the 5.1.18 changelog:

After using the Help, Update... to upgrade MySQL Workbench, the application failed to start correctly. After the splash screen was displayed MySQL Workbench displayed an error dialog - “MySQL Workbench has stopped working”.

I have not yet received a reply to my request that my subscription for the SE version be renewed at no cost.

Since I've been unable to update to recent versions since November 18 2008 (one year ago) I feel that I should be granted another year of updates at no cost.

I see from Tony Bennet's posting that the SE version is not fixed yet.
My test used the OSS version since I can't download updates now for the SE version now that my subscription has expired.

I've reopened this incident since it isn't resolved for the SE version.

should be done by now, so i'm closing this again.
if there are any more issues about that please contact us directly (mail or irc).
