Commands end with ; or \g. Your MySQL connection id is 1 to server version: 5.0.25-debug Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer. mysql> CREATE TABLE geom (foo GEOMETRY NOT NULL, SPATIAL INDEX(foo) ); Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.01 sec) mysql> INSERT INTO geom (foo) VALUES (NULL); ERROR 1048 (23000): Column 'foo' cannot be null mysql> INSERT INTO geom (foo) VALUES (1); ERROR 1416 (22003): Cannot get geometry object from data you send to the GEOMETRY field mysql> INSERT INTO geom (foo) VALUES (''); ERROR 1105 (HY000): Unknown error This "Unknown" error message is a bug.

Noted in 5.0.32, 5.1.14 changelogs. Inserting a default or invalid value into a spatial column could fail with Unknown error rather than a more appropriate error.
